Background

A brief background on JLTurnings.......John has been a woodworker for over 20 years and a turner since 2006.  John is fortunate to have found a hobby that he truly enjoys.  One of the downfalls of having such a passion is that you can only have so much stuff in your home and of course the expense side of every hobby.  So, we have decided to try and share this hobby with you....hoping that you might enjoy John's beautiful piece(s) in your home.  Take a look at John's pieces, keeping in mind that everything can be custom made...so if you like a bowl, but prefer it made out of a different wood--just ask.  If you are interested in making a purchase  or have any questions, please contact us by email at contactus@jlturnings.com.  Gift certificates are available.  If you would like to visit us and look at John's work, mention this in your email.  John can give you a tour of his shop located at our home in Woodville, Wisconsin--hope you don't mind a little turning dust!  Browse our website, take time to look at the photo gallery and thank you for visiting.  Stop back  to see John's new items and share our website with family and friends.  The best advertising is word of mouth, so we appreciate your help!        John & Carrie

Woods & Techniques

Picture
Most of John's work is created from an original design.  He works with solid logs and also board lumber.  The logs he has received/purchased from family, friends and charity wood auctions and the board lumber he purchases from a local sawmill.  His favorite woods are butternut, boxelder, walnut and cherry, but he also works with oak, maple, poplar, ebony, leopard wood, padouk and grevillea.  The finishes used are polyurethane and shellac.  No stain is used-all of the colors you see are the true colors of nature.  Both of these finishes are considered food safe (polyurethane needs to cure for 30 days).  The internet has numerous sites and articles on food safe finishes.

Techniques Used:
Here are a few of the basic techniques used.
Segmented--cutting and gluing pieces of wood together in a ring shape.  Each ring is then glued together, forming a rough shape of the piece.  The piece is then turned into the desired shape.  This technique can be simple with a handful of pieces being glued up or more involved with hundreds of pieces being used.
Solid Log Turning--A solid log is turned into the desired piece--bowl, plate, etc., using a few different techniques.  A green or "wet" log can be turned and slowly dried in the microwave or left to air dry and then finished turning.   John prefers to use the air dry method.   A dry log can be turned--microwave drying is not required.  A "Natural Edge" technique is turning the piece from a solid log, while preserving the natural edge/bark of the log.
Board Lumber can be glued up, forming the turning blank.
Lace Work is a technique that creates a "lace" like look to the wood.  It involves using a hand tool and cutting out the pieces of wood in the desired design.  Many hours can be spent on this technique!  Examples of lace work are shown below.

Firewood VS Turning Wood         All items can be custom made but are never exact........

Picture
This vase was turned from a solid spalted maple log, capped with walnut.  It is a  "unique" piece with the spalting (black lines) running through the wood--much too pretty for firewood.  The spalting is an example of nature at work.  We received this log from a friend---he thought of John when he saw the spalting in the log and saved it from the woodpile!   A vase similar to this could be custom made---but this vase could not be copied due to the unique log.  Even if vases were turned from the same tree, you may get very different results.   Another example of this is burls.  Every burl has its own unique character, so two pieces are never exact.  Burls are not rare, yet they do not grow on every tree.  They are treasured by turners, so  please do not burn as firewood!  If you would like to see an amazing tree, full of burls, walk in the park along the waterfront at Hudson, Wisconsin.   Below is an example of a bowl turned from a burl.
